FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2002

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
John Yellow Bird Steele - Congratulations for bucking the "Let's Kick the Incumbent Out of Office" trend that was common throughout Indian Country. Now, watch as the mainstream media ignores Pine Ridge for the next four years.

Tim Martin - Suddenly, you are back on the radar screen as your good friend departs the Department of Interior. Some say you should have been there in the first place.

John Herrington - Let's hope you go up this time! And maybe you could chew some tobacco instead?

Phil Hogen - We look forward to your chairmanship of the National Indian Gaming Commission. Get to work!

The Losers
Neal McCaleb - We're sorry to see you go but your dig at the rights of thousands of the people you swore to serve was unacceptable.

Gale Norton - Who are you going to blame next? Al-Qaeda?

Government Lawyers - Appeal after appeal after challenge after challenge. We wonder if certain lawmakers want to limit your means of income as easily as they do for others.

Tribal Leaders - This was a bad week for you! Arrests, firings and other shenanigans. No wonder everybody kicked you out of office.

In The Middle
107th Congress - There was little action on dozens of Indian bills until the final days of the session. Too bad you couldn't have done more earlier.

Individual Indians - The passive trust concept eked through the Senate without so much as a request for your input. We predict this "reform" will turn out, as usual, not to be.

Haskell Wetlands - Why don't they just build a bubble enclosure around you instead?

Indian Inmate - Little did we know there was such concern about your progeny to draw so many dissenting opinions.
