In The Hoop
FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 2002

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Jim Gray - Congratulations! Indian Country rejoiced when we heard the news.

Tom Slonaker - So it turns out you weren't fired by Auntie Gale. You were fired by the task force!

Don Young - We know you're not really all that pro-Alaska Native sovereignty but you regale us with your rants. Keep them coming.

Sokaogon Band of Ojibwe - We knew the Supreme Court wasn't going to take the state of Wisconsin's challenge but it's a victory anyway! Time to shut down that mine.

The Losers
Navajo Nation - Say goodbye to that $600 million. You know the Supreme Court won't go for that even if former government officials lied to you.

Charles Tillman - You can say goodbye to ITMA, NCAI and that $3 billion too.

Department of Interior - Even back then you couldn't pay an account holder.

Bush Administration - Didn't we just get reorganized last week? We're losing track of all the bureaucratic shuffling of the terrorists.

In The Middle
South Dakota and Army Corps - You already have a bad record in Indian Country, the latest incident just makes it look even worse.

Western Shoshone Nation - Senator Harry Reid seems intent on pushing his land "settlement" deal through Congress even though most tribal members refused to vote in the latest referendum. This sounds like justice.

Wayne Smith - Does this mean you'll be going back into business with your old pal? We can see the letter now: "As you probably are aware, I was the guy who actually ran the BIA . . ."
