Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
White People - From being able to sue the Bureau of Indian Affairs to escaping charges for contributing to the worst fire in Arizona history, you sure got it good.

Winnebago Tribe - Congratulations on your latest victory, but will the state of Kansas back off? We expect an immediate appeal to the 10th Circuit!

Digital Divide - You've been bridged! Or so the Bush administration claims. Next, the government will say Indian Country is wealthy and doesn't need services.

Montie R. Deer - Here's to forces in the government that want you to stick around! We know who they are.

The Losers
Chinook Nation - Kevin Gover says you exist, Neal McCaleb says you don't. The Lewis and Clark bicentennial will go on without you and the world will have lost an important chapter in history. Isn't America grand?

J. Steven Griles - You're not a lawyer but you play one in federal court. How about acting like a trustee for once?

Indian Beneficiaries - The Department of Interior won't admit it can't provide a full accounting, the House won't fund anything anyway and President Bush doesn't seem to care about responsibility for your assets.

Multimedia Games - Your savior Liz Homer is gone, Teresa Poust is a lame duck and your enemy Montie Deer is sticking around. We hate to see what this does to your stock price.

In The Middle
Native Elders - You need increased funding and more economic opportunities. Whatever it takes.

Cochise - We wonder how you'd feel with an oversized church getting built next to your grave site. Might be time for another fight.

IHS, BIA workers and their friends - U.S. Attorneys are after you, Better hide! Because punishing Indians is a lot easier than rooting out real government fraud.
