In The Hoop
THURSDAY, AUGUST 8, 2002 Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues. Oops!
Thanks to an eagle-eyed staff member of the House, Indianz.Com discovered that several pages are missing from our electronic version of the Department of Interior's recent report "Allegations Concerning Conduct of Department of the Interior Employees Involved in Various Aspects of the Cobell Litigation." Not only is our copy missing page 73, it also does not contain a set of recommendations Inspector General Earl E. Devaney has made. So this hard-working staff member informs us that the full, complete and accurate report should be available at http://www.oig.doi.gov soon. (We also checked the http://www.indiantrust.com web site and the copy there does not appear to have the information.) Oops! Part II
What happens when you press the wrong key and your e-mail gets sent the whole world instead of hundreds of your closest friends? Rep. Rush Holt (D-N.J.) found that out last weekend when his office accidentally spammed many members of the House, causing e-mail service to grind to a halt, Roll Call reports today. "He's a rocket scientist - not a computer scientist," an "angry" House aide told the column Heard on the Hill. Oops! Part III
Speaking of the Inspector General's report, it makes mention to the fact that a top official in charge of a information technology knew little about the agency's "business processes" yet was tasked with overseeing the development of a key Indian trust computer system. But he's not the only person in charge who didn't fully grasp the situation. "After three years of running the Bureau of Indian Affairs, I still don't know what happens at a realty office out at some agency," former Assistant Secretary Kevin Gover told us this week.
