FRIDAY, JUNE 28, 2002

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Eastern Pequot Tribe and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe - Congratulations on your new federal status! It's time to work out any differences and fight the state of Connecticut together.

Chinook Nation - Are you next on the list for recognition? The prospects look good.

Virginia Tribes - You may not be federally recognized but at least those kind people at the 4-H club in Virginia continue to honor your existence. Oops, not anymore.

The Losers
State of Connecticut - Number of pages of documents submitted against Pequot Tribes: 8,000 and counting. Amount spent fighting Pequot Tribes: $1 million-plus. Look on your face when Pequot Tribes were recognized anyway: Priceless.

Secretary of Interior Gale Norton - If you are waiting for the Supreme Court to help define you trust duties, then you shouldn't be a trustee.

Indian Country - So much for that "long overdue" historical accounting. House appropriators apparently think allotment started in 1985 not 1887.

Congress - If only you got this upset about negative decisions affecting tribal sovereignty. "One nation, under God" apparently doesn't include 500-plus Indian nations.

In The Middle
Oklahoma Tribes - We heard one of your fellow tribes is ratting on "illegal" games at your casinos. You better ask somebody!

Special Trustee Advisory Board - If Auntie Gale can't fire you, then we guess Congress will try!

Chickasaw Nation - Will George Skibine determine that your new gaming facility comes under an IGRA exemption? We'll wait and see.

White Mountain Apache Tribe - All of Indian Country prays for a successful recovery. But it would be ironic if the Army fort that is part of your Supreme Court case somehow got torched.
