In The Hoop
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2002 Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues. I Miss The Message Board!
We've gotten a lot of e-mail from Indianz.Com readers who miss the message board. Well, we miss it too! As many of you know, we closed the board in response to an overzealous user(s) who recently called up the Winnebago tribal offices in Nebraska to threaten a lawsuit over alleged slander, libel and probably something about Cherokee Nation Chief Chad Smith. The threat itself wasn't the reason for the shut down, though, it was a technical problem that arose due to said user(s)' Internet activity. But rest assured, we are working on an upgrade everyone has been requesting for the past year! We can't promise it will be 100% Cherokee free but it will debut soon. So thanks to all our patient fans during this period of mourning. The New Indian War
Did you hear the one about the student group that offended Native Americans with a portrayal of Indians as mascots? Well it happened recently at the University of New Mexico. Except this time around, it was the Kiva Club, the school's Indian student organization, that was forced to explain the actions of its members. Hyped up about UNM's homecoming game against the Utah University Utes, the club's entry in a mural contest depicted "violence toward American Indians," The Daily Lobo reported on October 23. "We, as members of the Kiva Club who participated in the mural competition, would like to take full responsibility for our actions and sincerely apologize for hurting several American Indian students," the apology published in the school paper stated. The Kiva Club wasn't the only one caught in hot water: a fraternity drew a mural that depicted an American Indian being lassoed by Lucy Lobo, another UNM mascot. "We apologize for the part of our mural that offended members of the community," Pi Kappa Phi wrote in its duly published apology. Confusion arose because some students actually though Utah University's mascot was an Indian. In fact, it's some sort of bird! (We think it's a hawk.) So we can understand how these students mistook a bird for an Indian. But if you want judge for yourself, you can check out some pictures that we obtained. UNM, by the way, beat the Utes 42-35.
