Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

Where in the World is Gale Norton?
In case you haven't noticed, Gale Norton is running for President!

How do we know? Well, let's count just a few of her recent campaign appearances on behalf of Republicans, big and small, (mostly small) throughout the United States.

Sep. 16 - Arizona for 1st Congressional District candidate Rick Renzi. Appeared at a $50-a-plate dinner but whisked off the following day after she was held in contempt for lying about the trust fund.

Early Oct. - Colorado for 4th Congressional District hopeful Marilyn Musgrave and 7th District pick Bob Beauprez. It must have been two for one night.

Oct. 8 - Missouri for Senate candidate Jim Talent. Appeared at a "Women for Talent" event. We won't touch this one.

Oct. 22 - Colorado for Musgrave, again! This lady must really be struggling if Gale is all the White House can bring out.

Oct. 26 - Arizona for Renzi, again. Appeared at an "old-fashioned" steak fry. This means caribou from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge was not served.

Oct. 28 - Wyoming for gubernatorial hopeful Eli Bebout. "We need a Western governor that can work with the Department of Interior and that person is Eli Bebout," she said. Hmmm. Like Judy "Why Can't You Give Me a Map of Those Sacred Sites" Martz in nearby Montana?

Oct. 29 - California for a state (?!) senator. "This is a really important election," she said. Not when you're appearing for a measly state senator, Gale.

Oct. 31 - Alaska for Frank Murkowski, candidate for governor. This is a big one. But she's being upstaged by a cow, who got better advance press than she did.

Folks, this isn't even an exhaustive list. She's also appeared for Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Ore.), somebody named McVey (not Timothy McVeigh) and by proxy in Hawaii for GOP gubernatorial pick Linda Lingle.

All of this is not courtesy of taxpayer dollars though. (We can thank about 20 Department of Justice lawyers wasting our money fighting the trust fund.) Her travel is paid for by the campaigns of the candidates.

But while she was out, here is what she wasn't doing on behalf of Indian Country.

Sep. 17 - Wasn't admitting responsibility for lying to a federal court about the trust fund.

Early Oct. - Wasn't helping the Five Civilized Tribes save their land reform bill.

Oct. 7 - Wasn't at the Sovereignty Run seeking to protect tribal sovereignty.

Oct. 22 - Wasn't reminding Neal McCaleb to file and print before deleting his e-mails.

Oct. 26 - Wasn't at the Alaska Federation of Natives, affirming the United States' relationship with Alaska Native governments.
