FRIDAY, MAY 31, 2002

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Trust Reform Task Force - You survived a weekend in the woods, a contentious House hearing, some funding wobbles, another EDS contract and five months of meetings. But will Indian Country let you out alive?

Alaska Natives - Negotiations? Last time we checked, the courts ruled in your favor, not the Republicans who hired Gale Norton to try and beat you.

Jeb Bush - We know you, and not Florida's "white-sand beaches" and "natural treasures," are the sole beneficiary of the president's latest initiative.

FBI Web Surfers - Now you can get paid for what everyone else does on company time for free!

The Losers
Trust Fund Account Holders - We didn't see much in the tribal leaders' plan that will benefit you. We saw a lot of protections for tribes, though...

Wayne Smith - Have you gotten your job back yet? So much for your high-powered attorney.

The Wall Street Journal - There's something wrong in the world when you actually begin to advocate for more litigation. Or is that hypocrisy we detect?

Steve Griles - Geez, those environmentalists hate you. You must be glad to have friends in Indian Country.

In The Middle
The Navajo Nation - Are you as worried about the Supreme Court's pending action on your $600 million royalty case as we are? The trust will hit the fan, literally, we expect.

Mike Anderson - An independent commission is being convened to determine if you qualify as a "Clinton-era head." Expect an in-depth report, followed by a series of Congressional hearings chaired by Republicans.

Idaho Tribal Members - At least now you know where not to hunt.

Indian Mascots - Some people say you're offensive, others disagree, why don't we just change all of them to Whities and see who stands in line.
