In The Hoop
TUESDAY, JULY 30, 2002 Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues. Get Your Sovereignty Shoes On
The Quinault Nation of Washington is spearheading an historic event this year, the first-ever American Indian and Alaska Native Sovereignty Run. Participants will leave the Quinault Reservation on September 11 and make their way through 12 states before arriving at the Supreme Court on October 7. Talk about a powerful statement. You can check Indianz.Com soon for more details about the run but for those who can't wait that long, visit the run's hot new web site at http://www.sovrun.org. Go Granny, Get Busy
What do you call grandma's boyfriend? That question apparently is facing more and more Americans these days. According to the Census Bureau, at least 112,000 elderly couples live together but are not married. Households with at least one adult over the age of 65 have increased 60 percent from 1990, the bean counters report. Tribes Get New Indian Contact
The National Park Service has just named a new tribal liaison for its Intermountain Region. Cyd Martin, a cultural anthropologist who has worked on several Alaska Native projects during her tenure at the Gates of the Arctic National Park and the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve, will develop policy affecting Indian Country. She will also provide advice on Indian issues for the states of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Texas and Oklahoma. In Your Hoop
