In The Hoop
FRIDAY, APRIL 19, 2002

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
In The Hoop - Happy Birthday! You're a year old today.

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge - You're safe for the time being. At least until Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) finds a way to tap into your resources. "There's other ways we can get to that oil."

Indian Trust Records - You're safe too, or are you? There's nothing to prevent the government from burning you right where you are!

National Indian Gaming Commission - You're inspiring lawsuits and dissent among tribes. That means you're actually doing something.

The Losers
Inupiat Eskimos - So much for self-determination on lands the Department of Interior won't take into trust.

Sen. Frank Murkowski - Those pictures of Inupiat kids playing in snow aren't doing any good. But they are amusing, so keep showing them!

Special Trustee Tom Slonaker - Why don't you just burn the records yourself?

Secretary Gale Norton - So much for trying to limit the court monitor. He'll be watching over your every move.

In The Middle
Porcupine Caribou - Will drilling on Inupiat lands hurt you? Only a reassessment ordered by Auntie Gale will tell.

Wayne Smith - We can guess where you won't be staying next time you go see your kids.

Wyandotte Nation - A casino? In Kansas? Haven't we been through this before?

Miami Nation - A casino? In Indiana? Haven't we been through this before?
