After publicly defending Jack Abramoff and challenging the Department of Justice to investigate him, Rep. John Doolittle (R-California) is refusing to answer questions about his ties to the disgraced lobbyist.
Doolittle says he's a longtime opponent of gaming. But he wrote a letter to Interior Secretary Gale Norton in June 2003, criticizing the closure of the Meskwaki Tribe's casino in Iowa.
In October 2003, Doolittle wrote a letter to Norton, urging speedier consideration of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's federal recognition petition The tribe is interested in gaming but filed its application in 1978 -- long before gaming became a reality.
Both tribes, however, hired Abramoff and his law firm. The Meskwakis donated money to Doolittle and Abramoff also gave money to the Congressman.
