Ralph Reed, the former head of the Christian Coalition and a Republican candidate for lieutenant governor in Georgia, denies lobbying Texas officials on tribal matters.
Reed was paid by disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff for a "grassroots" campaign that targeted tribal casinos in Texas. The campaign was funded by the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana, a wealthy gaming tribe.
Reed says he never contacted any state officials directly but may have talked to them on a "superficial" basis. But three watchdog groups say he failed to register as a lobbyist. The Travis County Attorney is considering whether to open a probe of Reed.
Reed has since said he regrets working with Abramoff and Michael Scanlon, Abramoff's former partner. But he hasn't said whether he will return the millions he took from gaming tribes.
