Recall of anti-Abramoff Sag Chip leaders debated

A recall against leaders of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan who opposed disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff is moving forward but both sides dispute whether a recall election will actually occur.

More than 1,000 tribal members signed recall petitions against Chief Audrey Falcon, Sub Chief Bernard Sprague, Treasurer Charmaine Benz, Secretary Ruth Moses and Sergeant-at-Arms Brent Jackson. The petitions cite "misconduct and dishonesty" in dealing with Abramoff, The Morning Sun reported. Falcon has said the tribe was fleeced out of at least $14 million by Abramoff and Sprague testified before the Senate that the tribe was duped by Abramoff.

Organizers of the recall want an election in hopes of ousting the leaders. But the dispute is being challenged in tribal court.
