Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio), the Republican lawmaker most closely linked to the Jack Abramoff scandal, is announcing today he will seek re-election.
Ney is identified as "Representative #1" in court papers. He is alleged to have accepted campaign contributions, expensive trips and other items of value in exchange for legislative favors to benefit Abramoff's tribal and other clients.
Ney has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. Polls show that he remains popular in his district although people are aware of his links to confessed felons.
Ney was forced to step down as chairman of the House Administration Committee pending resolution of his legal issues. He has returned thousands in campaign contributions although none to the Tigua Tribe of Texas, a former Abramoff client.
