"It shouldn't be easy to fire a tenured professor, and it's not. But Ward Churchill has been "relieved of his duties" pending his final appeals, and for that we are, well, relieved.

The University of Colorado's interim Boulder chancellor, Phil DiStefano, Monday gave the controversial professor his walking papers, noting nonetheless that Churchill has 10 days to appeal the decision. In addition, CU President Hank Brown and the board of regents must finalize his firing before this episode is finished.

We think Churchill should have quit CU of his own volition after his disguise as a scholar was shredded by two very thorough peer reviews of his shoddy research and academic work. But that would have taken a dose of intestinal fortitude Churchill apparently lacks. "
