Controversy over University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill is being blamed for the resignation of CU President Elizabeth Hoffman on Monday.
Hoffman said the scandal was just one of many reasons behind her decision. The school is under fire for allegations of sexual assault and alcohol abuse among football recruits and use of funds.
But some said the pressure mounted with Churchill's controversial essay linking some of the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to Nazis. Just last Thursday, Hoffman defended Churchill's freedom of speech and blasted critics on the left and the right of engaging in a kind of "new McCarthyism."
Churchill's academic record is being reviewed in light of the debate and allegations of academic fraud. He has claimed to be Indian but lacks documentation.
