Controversial University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill is being reviewed by a disciplinary panel to determine whether he committed fraud through his academic works and claims of Indian heritage.
Rather than wait for the review to be completed, The Denver Rocky Mountain News did a probe of its own. Saying it took two months, the paper says the investigation shows everything critics have claimed about Churchill is basically true.
"University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill fabricated historical facts, published the work of others as his own and repeatedly made false claims about two federal Indian laws," the paper says.
Over the next four days, the paper will present the results of its investigation. Today, the paper says Churchill's claim that the U.S. Army deliberately spread smallpox to a North Dakota tribe "isn't supported by the sources he has cited."
On Tuesday, the paper will look at Churchill's alleged plagiarism. On Wednesday, it will be Churchill's claims about the Dawes Act of 1887 and the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990.
Finally, the paper will say Churchill's claims of Indian ancestry "aren�t supported by extensive genealogical records."
