Brenda Child, a member of the Red Lake Nation of Minnesota, is upset that a photo she took appears in a book published by controversial University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill.
Child, a University of Minnesota faculty member, wrote Boarding School Seasons about the boarding school experience. In it, she published a photo she took of the grave of a 16- year-old Ojibwe boy who died at a boarding school in Kansas in 1902
Churchill used the photo in Kill the Indian, Save the Man and cited Child's book 16 times. Child says the citations are accurate but is upset Churchill used her photo to exaggerate the number of Indian students who died at boarding schools.
