The family of Neil Stonechild filed suit against police in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, for Stonechild's death in 1990.
The suit seeks $30 million from two ex-officers linked to Stonechild's death, the police chief at the time and other officers. Stonechild's mother Stella Bignell says the police owe her $30 million.
Stonechild was 17 when he went missing in November 1990. He body was found several days later on the outskirts of town. An official government inquiry found that two ex-officers took him into custody and were the last to be seen alive with him. Marks on his body were "likely" caused by police handcuffs, the inquiry said.
The ex-officers have appealed their firing from the force. They say they had nothing to do with Stonechild's death.
Deputy police chief Dan Wiks was suspended for giving false information about police involvement in the case. The Saskatoon Police Service is appealing, saying Wiks committed a more serious crime.
