White cops want Native justice

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2001 Two white police officers in Canada who were convicted of abandoning a Native man in the freezing cold have asked a judge to allow them to be punished through a sentencing circle. A sentencing circle is traditionally used in Native communities to restore harm caused by crime and wrongdoing. In the case of the officers, their lawyer says a circle might help heal tensions between the Aboriginal community in Saskatchewan and the police. Whether or not the judge agrees to the request, the officers plan on appealing their conviction. Get the Story:
