Two police officers in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, who were fired after being linked to the death of a Native teen are appealing their dismissals.

Hearings started on Wednesday for ex-officers Larry Hartwig and Bradley Senger. They were the last people seen with Neil Stonechild, the 17-year-old Cree teen who was later found frozen to death on the outskirts of town in 1990.

Stonechild's family and Native leaders welcomed the firing of the men but say their reinstatement will harm relations between Native people and the police. The men deny any wrongdoing in the case.
