Native community honors mother of Native teen

The Native community in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, presented eagle feathers and blankets to the mother and a friend of Neil Stonechild, a Cree teen whose death has been linked to police officers.

Stella Bignell and Jason Roy, Stonechild's friend, were honored at a ceremony on Friday. Both gave testimony in government's inquiry into Stonechild's death, with Roy saying he saw Stonechild being placed in the back of a police squad car.

The inquiry found that two police officers picked up Stonechild the night he was last seen alive. Bruises found on his body were likely caused by police handcuffs, the inquiry said.
