Two police officers in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, who have been linked to the death of a Cree Native teen remain on the force amid dissension in the ranks over their involvement.

Bradley Senger and Lawrence Hartwig were suspended with pay after a government inquiry was released. The report said the men picked up Neil Stonechild, 17, on the night he was last seen alive. Stonechild was found dead several days later with bruises on his face "likely" caused by police handcuffs, the inquiry found.

The Saskatoon police chief intended to make an announcement yesterday about the status of the officers. It was widely expected both were going to be fired.

But other officers and the officer's union are supporting the men. That led the chief to put off a decision indefinitely.

Stonechild died in November 1990.
