Hundreds attended a memorial service for Jonathon Solomon Sr., an Athabascan elder who died last week at the age of 74.
Speakers recalled Solomon's commitment to the Gwich'in Nation and to Native people. He fought to protect the Porcupine caribou herd and against drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Solomon always kept a positive attitude, friends, family and colleagues said. He also had a great sense of humor, they said.
Although he dropped out of school at age 10, Solomon was well educated in understanding and solving complex political situations. He was well known among state and national leaders.
