Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) made an inaccurate claim during last month's debate on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge when he said oil revenues will be shared with all Alaska Natives.
"When one region gets money from natural resources, it must share will the other 11 regions," Stevens said on March 16. "That's why all Alaska Natives have an interest in ANWR."
But that is wrong, said Richard Glenn, a vice president of Arctic Slope Regional Corporation. As part of a deal with the federal government to obtain land within the refuge, ASRC is not required to share revenues with other Native corporations.
"That's a bad quote," Glenn told The Seattle Times. "This is not something we hide or anything, but it is a fact."
ASRC owns the subsurface rights to 92,160 acres of ANWR land and stands to gain if drilling is authorized. The Kaktovik Inupiat Corporation, a corporation representing the Inupiat village of Kaktovik, owns the surface rights.
