Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-Arizona), the co-chair of the Congressional Native American Caucus, has received more money from Jack Abramoff than any other member of Congress, according to a new analysis from the Center for Responsive Politics.
Hayworth received $101,620 from Abramoff, nine former tribal clients and a casino company, according to the center. This was more than Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Montana), who has previously been called the largest recipient of Abramoff cash.
The center's numbers are different because they do not include donations from Abramoff's associates. This method of calculation presents a different picture of Abramoff's donations -- it emphasizes that the overwhelming majority of money went to Republicans.
Hayworth, an advocate for tribal sovereignty, says he won't return any of the Abramoff donations. Other members of Congress, including Burns, have given money back to the tribes and made donations to Indian organizations.
