Red Lake shootings case not over despite plea

Although a criminal trial has been avoided, legal action over the March 21, 2005, shootings on the Red Lake Reservation is far from over, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Louis Jourdain, 17, who pleaded to one count to sending threatening messages over the Internet, still has to be sentenced. He could be released with probation or he could be confined until he turns 21. Sentencing could come by the end of December.

In addition to the Jourdain case, a number of civil suits are possible. The families of some of the victims have notified the public school system on the reservation that they intend to seek damages. The mother of Jeff Weise, the 16-year-old shooter who killed nine people before turning the gun on himself, has also taken some legal steps.

Jourdain, the son of Red Lake Nation Chairman Floyd Jourdain Jr., was the only person charged in connection with the shootings. As part of his agreement, the more serious charges were dropped.

People on the reservation are still reacting to the plea. Many say they are still searching for answers. Some say it's too early to tell what will happen as the legal cases proceed.
