Native reporter Jodi Rave Lee of The Missoulian published a two-day series of articles on the March 21, 2005, shootings on the Red Lake Reservation.

Jeff Weise, 16, killed nine people that day before taking his own life. His family members are still trying to figure out why he did it. They said he was teased at school and was on antidepressants but that he was intelligent and previously showed no signs of violence.

The shootings have drawn attention to problems Indian youth face. Since that day, three young people on the reservation have taken their own lives. In 2004, three people committed suicide. Throughout the nation, Indian teens commit suicide, or attempt to, at extremely high rates.

Some tribes have developed programs in hopes of turning things around. The programs emphasize tradition and culture.
