"On March 31, a Herald editorial stated, "If there is one thing Red Lake and many other reservations need, it's a free and independent press".

Unfortunately, free and independent are hardly accurate descriptions of the press. Need I remind anyone, especially those 'Non-Indians who may be surprised that such a suggestion (about the First Amendment's application on reservation land) is necessary,' that most tribal governments and social systems have been in existence prior to the formation of the U.S. government, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights?

Furthermore, for the first several decades of American history, American Indian tribes and people had been purposefully excluded, if not purposefully annihilated, from becoming apart of the United States as nations or citizens."
