Three shareholders of Cook Inlet Region Inc. are lobbying Congress to ensure that every Alaska Native shares in the revenues oil produced from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, Native corporations are required to share 70 percent of profits from oil and gas production, mining, logging, and other resource development with other corporations.
But under a special act of Congress, this requirement was waived for
Arctic Slope Regional Corp. when it was given mineral rights to 92,000 acres within ANWR. The corporation supports drilling in the refuge.
But Robert Rude and Gosta Dagg, directors of CIRI, and former state senator and CIRI shareholder Jerry Ward say drilling shouldn't be allowed unless the waiver is revoked. They have asked Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona), the chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, and Rep. George Miller (D-California), a member of the House Resources Committee, for assistance.
