A federal judge will rule this week on a motion to open the trial of Louis Jourdain, the only person charged in connection with the March 21, 2005, shootings on the Red Lake Reservation in Minnesota.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune and Associated Press want the trial open to the public. Arguments on the motion were heard on Tuesday.
Jourdain is being tried as a juvenile so court proceedings are closed. Federal prosecutors sough to try him as a juvenile but were rejected.
Jourdain, now 17, was 16 when he was charged in connection with the deaths of 9 people on the reservation. The shooter was Jeff Wiese, 16, who killed himself.
Jourdain is the son of Red Lake Ojibwe Nation Chairman Floyd Jourdain Jr.
