Janklow gets 100 days for felony manslaughter
Friday, January 23, 2004

Bill Janklow, former governor and former Congressman from South Dakota, was sentenced to 100 days in jail, three years probation and ordered to pay $11,000 in fines and fees for his felony manslaughter conviction.

Janklow was ordered to report to jail February 7. After 30 days, he can choose to do community service for the remaining 70 days, but must return to jail at night. He was also ordered to pay $50 per day for his jail time, and his license was suspended for three years. He could have been sentenced up to 11 years.

"It didn't make me happy, but there are times when things catch up with us and you have to pay," friend Charlene Bell Kokesh, an employee of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, told The Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

Janklow was found guilty by a jury for the August 16 death of motorcyclist Randy Scott. Janklow was speeding when his car hit and killed Scott on a South Dakota highway.

Scott's family has filed a civil wrongful-death suit against Janklow in Minnesota, where Scott was a resident. The family is asking for damages "in excess of six figures," said a lawyer.
