Janklow enters not gulity plea in manslaughter case
Monday, September 29, 2003

Rep. Bill Janklow (R), former governor of South Dakota, pleaded not guilty on Friday to a second-degree felony manslaughter charge for the death of a motorcyclist.

Janklow also pleaded not guilty to three misdemeanors, including speeding. Authorities say he was driving over the speed limit when his car hit and killed Randy Scott on August 16.

Members of the Dakota-Lakota-Nakota Coalition protested Janklow's court appearance. They are drawing attention to his history with Indian people, which has not always been positive, and say he escaped charges for the rape of a Native girl.

A jury trial on the traffic charges is set for December 1.
