The president of the Indian Association at the University of North Dakota has resigned because he doesn't oppose the school's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.
Christopher Peltier, a junior and member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, said the group is uncomfortable with his position on the controversial nickname. "There are more Indian students here that don't care about the logo, who are just here to get an education," he told The Grand Forks Herald.
Peltier said he doesn't think the nickname contributes to a hostile and abusive environment for Indian students. "Things happen to Indian students, but that's racism in general. I don't think it's caused by the logo," he told the paper.
