The Spirit Lake Nation won't oppose the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo, school president Charles Kupchella said.

Kupchella met with tribal leaders recently and he said they told him they were going to abide by a 2003 resolution passed by the council on the issue. The resolution say the tribe will not oppose the controversial nickname and logo so long as it is use in an appropriate manner.

Tribal members, in a general council meeting, had called on the resolution to be rescinded. They said they school hasn't lived up to its end of the bargain. Other Sioux tribes in the state oppose the name.

Kupchella says UND will continue to fight to keep the nickname off the NCAA's list of hostile and abusive mascots. A lawsuit is being threatened.
