Some letters in response to Nick Coleman's column about the University of North Dakota "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.

Matt Noah: "Never mind the overwhelming popularity of the Fighting Sioux name and logo even among Native Americans. Never mind the indisputable fact of respect for Native American culture and history at the University of North Dakota. Nick Coleman has an ax to grind, and facts would only dull his grindstone."

Brett Dyste: "More than a third of the Indians in North Dakota support the name, and many more couldn't care less."

Larry Pederson: "The Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe, the one closest to UND, passed a resolution in 2000 supporting UND's use of the nickname, and it still stands today, despite the NCAA's attempts to get that tribe to rescind it. A poll conducted by the Fargo Forum revealed that 63 percent of American Indians surveyed in North Dakota said they didn't find UND's use of the nickname and logo offensive or didn't care about it."
