"American Indian tribes will have the final say about schools that want to use American Indian nicknames and mascots in postseason competition. The NCAA will begin banning Indian imagery and nicknames starting in February.
Tribes have a right to be upset if they are portrayed in an uncomplimentary light. But the nicknames adopted by most schools are intended to recognize attributes long attributed to American Indians, such as courage and perseverance. The nicknames are signs of respect and admiration."
