TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2001 In what could further upset Sioux tribes in the region, the new $100 million sports arena at the University of North Dakota will be adorned with a statue of a Sioux warrior on a horse, sources told The Grand Forks Herald. The statue is currently hidden inside a plywood cube in front of the Ralph Engelstad Arena. It will be unveiled when the arena opens this Friday. Engelstad is a wealthy alumnus who threatened to withdraw support for the arena if the school got rid of its "Fighting Sioux" nickname, which area tribes and most Native American students consider offensive. The North Dakota Board of Higher Education voted to keep the name a day after Engelstad made his threat to school president Charles Kupchella. The Northern Plains Conference on American Indian Team Names & Logos is taking place at the school this week. Winona LaDuke is scheduled to speak. Get the Story:
