Meskwaki voters replace four who were recalled

The new leaders of the Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa will be sworn into office today.

Homer Bear Jr. was elected chairman in a recall election last month. Yesterday, voters chose four new council members.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is recognizing the result of the elections, but Alex Walker Jr., the ousted chairman, is appealing.

Bear and his new council hope to reopen the tribe's casino, which has been closed since May as a result of a leadership dispute between Bear and Walker. The National Indian Gaming Commission chief of staff said the casino could be up and running within weeks.
