State seeks dismissal of Schaghticoke lawsuit

The state of Connecticut is seeking the dismissal of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation's federal recognition lawsuit.

The tribe won federal recognition in January 2004. But an appeal by the state led the Bureau of Indian Affairs to reverse the decision.

Since then, the tribe and the state have been battling in court. The tribe has successfully deposed former Interior Secretary Gale Norton and other top officials and has secured documents from lobbyists hired by state politicians.

But the tribe's efforts appear to be losing steam now that a federal judge has denied a request for more discovery. The order was sealed but both sides confirmed the subject of the order.

The state now says Judge Peter C. Dorsey can finally ruled on the tribe's claim. But the tribe says it has pending discovery requests.
