"The Bureau of Indian Affairs Wednesday notified the Historic Eastern Pequot Tribe and Schaghticoke Tribal Nation that they do not qualify for federal recognition. While the decision understandably disappoints the tribes, two of seven criteria for recognition were not met. The rejections were justified.
This is the tribes' third go-round with the BIA. They had earlier been granted federal recognition -- the Historic Eastern Pequots in 2002, the Schaghticokes in 2004 -- only to see it rescinded in May.
Federal tribal recognition carries with it access to federal funding for health care, education and housing. It also makes tribes eligible to build casinos.
The seven criteria needed for federal recognition are concise and clear: They are seven sentences. Both the Pequots and Schaghticokes failed criteria 2 and 3."
