Leaders of two Connecticut tribes say they will continue to fight for federal recognition.

The Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation and the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation were denied recognition on October 12. The Bureau of Indian Affairs said the tribe's failed to meet all the criteria for federal recognition.

Each tribe had won previously won recognition. But a challenge from the state forced the BIA to reconsider, leading to the reversal in October.

"First page said it all," Eastern Pequot Chairwoman Marcia Flowers told The Washington Post, describing the fax tribal leaders received from the BIA.

The tribes have called for investigations into the way the petition was handled. They believe state officials unfairly influenced the process.
