The Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut is waiting and praying as it awaits another federal recognition decision from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The tribes won preliminary recognition during the Clinton administration in March 2000. The Bush administration issued a favorable final decision in June 2002.
The state and three towns challenged the final ruling. In May, the Interior Board of Indian Appeals vacated the decision, saying the BIA relied too heavily on state recognition of the tribe.
Acting assistant secretary Jim Cason is now set to announce a reconsidered decision tomorrow. Whatever way it goes, more litigation is expected. The Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, whose favorable decision was vacated along similar lines, is also waiting for an answer.
