The Bureau of Indian Affairs is scheduled to issue new rulings on the recognition of two Connecticut tribes by September 12.
The BIA was ordered to prepare new final determinations on the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation and the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation. The Interior Board of Indian Appeals found that the prior decisions relied too heavily on state recognition of the tribes.
The Schaghticoke tribe is led by Chief Richard Velky. A rival group called the Schaghticoke Indian Tribe claims to be the legitimate tribal government. Two from this faction are facing criminal charges in a dispute with Velky.
