Federal Recognition
Column: A sad end to tribal recognition saga

Recognition Documents:
BIA Press Release | Eastern Pequot Notice | Schaghticoke Notice

Reaction to Decisions:
Eastern Pequot | Attorney General
Gov. Jodi Rell | Sens. Dodd, Lieberman
"Most Connecticut residents probably read this week's reversal of federal recognition for the Schaghticokes and Eastern Pequots as 'no more casinos.'

Whoopee.

Yet I'll admit a certain sadness came over me when I heard the news.

There's a strong case that no Connecticut tribe fully meets the federal criteria for recognition as a continuous sovereign Indian nation. Still, you'd need a stone heart not to feel a bit sorry for the tribes that got it only to have it snatched away.

For sure there are legitimate differences among the five state-recognized tribes, with some more cohesive and easier to connect to Native ancestry than others. But every case hinges solely on a few relatives who hung on."
