The Schaghticoke Tribal Nation of Connecticut is waiting for the Bureau of Indian Affairs to issue a new final determination on its petition for federal recognition.

In January 2004, the BIA ruled in favor of the tribe. But the Interior Board of Indian Appeals vacated the decision, holding that it relied too heavily on the state's continuous recognition of the tribe.

The new decision is expected on October 12. On that day, the BIA will also issue a decision on the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation, whose favorable decision was set aside on similar grounds as the Schaghticoke one.

The Schaghticokes said the reversal of its fate was due to improper lobbying by state and local officials. But a federal judge on Friday rejected the tribe's attempt to question groups that have opposed its federal recognition bid.
