The Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut is seeking a high-level review and internal investigation of its loss of federal recognition.
The tribe has asked Interior Secretary Gale Norton to review the Bureau of Indian Affairs decision that overturned the tribe's federal status. The tribe also wants the Inspector General to investigate.
Chairwoman Marcia Jones Flowers and other tribal members believe state officials may have improperly influenced the process. State officials deny the charges, which are also being aired by the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, whose recognition was overturned along with the Pequots.
Both tribes had received final determinations in favor of recognition. But after a second review, the BIA rescinded the decisions in October.
