The Schaghticoke Tribal Nation of Connecticut began running radio and television ads to promote its bid for federal recognition.
The ads tout the tribe's legitimacy. The tribe has been recognized on a continuous basis by the state since the late 1600s.
The ads also accuse state officials of improper lobbying. The tribe says the state violated a court order that limits contact with the Interior Department.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs is preparing to issue a new decision on the tribe's status. An answer is due by October 12. Another Connecticut tribe, the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation, is supposed to hear an answer today.
