The Connecticut papers have posted stories in response to the decision:
New London Day | Norwich Bulletin |
Hartford Courant
Update II, 1:50pm: The Hartford Courant is reporting that the tribes have been denied recognition. Here is the short text of the paper's web posting: "Sources say both the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation of Kent and the Eastern Pequots of North Stonington have been turned down in their bid for federal recognition. The two Connecticut tribes had won recognition -- which would have given each the right to develop gambling casinos -- only to have that recogntion rescinded in May."
Update: The decision is expected around 2pm.
Two Connecticut tribes waiting to hear answers on their federal recognition have been told to expect faxes from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, The Hartford Courant reports.
Representatives of the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation and the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation said they would receive a fax sometime this afternoon. In the past, the paper said they were notified by phone.
The BIA is issuing new final determinations on each tribe in response to an Interior Board of Indian Appeals ruling. The IBIA said the BIA relied too heavily on the fact that the state has recognized both tribes on a continuous basis since the late 1600s.
