The Lincoln Journal Star's series on liquor sales in the border town of Whiteclay won top honors in the 2006 Casey Medals for Meritorious Journalism contest.

"Standing at the Crossroads" was published in June 2005. The multi-part series focused on the social, legal, cultural and political issues surrounding the sale of liquor to residents of the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

For their work, reporters Kevin Abourezk, who is Native, and Colleen Kenney won first place for a project or series in the under-75,000 circulation category.
